The film, directed by Peruvian filmmaker -long-time resident in Venezuela- Marité Ugás tells the story of a thirteen-year-old boy in search for his mother. Ten years ago, she was carried off by a mudslide, he says, and now he has set off to find her. The film is based on a mudslide that actually took place in 1999 on the coast of the Venezuelan state of Vargas, which constitutes the worst natural disaster in the country’s modern history.

A 13-year old KID leaves his home and starts a journey along the Venezuelan coast. In order to survive, he captivates people by telling them anecdotes from the Mudslide Tragedy. Sometimes he is rescued by his mother, who sacrifices herself to save him; some other times it’s his father who dies. These stories, however, reveal some of the truth, and his past becomes clearer.

Ten years ago, a mudslide tore his world apart. Many disappeared, his mother among them. Now the memories, carefully threaded by his father, contradict each other and push him to search for his own story.

He has a difficult road ahead of him, where he will also find his own universe of affections and feelings. While crossing the desert, the KID doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry, but the crack in his soul is starting to heal.

“The Sergeant Matacho” (La sargento Matacho) won the Latinofusion Guadalajara Construye during the last Guadalajara Film Fest.

The film, directed by Colombian William Gonzalez’s takez on the consequences of local armed conflict. Co-written by Gonzalez, “Matacho” begins in 1948 Colombia where a young Rosalba Velasco witnesses the murder of her husband by local police.

Suffering deep trauma, she abandons her family, and any sense of femininity or maternal instinct, despite bearing children by various bandit leaders, and hell-bent on revenge, becomes a killing machine.

Latinofusion’s Award consists of $20,000 minimum guarantee against international sales rights. Beside Latinofusion’s, “Matacho” also won prizes from Churubusco Studios, covering transfer to positive print, Newart Sound, for 50 hours of THX-certified sound-mix, plus subtitling from Titra California.

Version seen at Guadalajara ran two and a half hours. Gonzalez said he could bring in a 1 hour, 40 minute final cut by May/June.

The 32nd edition of the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema will be held in Havana from December 2-12 this year. As in each of these events, the countries with the most works competing are Argentina and Brazil, although on this occasion Mexico’s presence will be hard to miss with its four feature films, five shorts and four debuting works.

As always, Latinofusion will be present in Havana, this year with 5 films, showcasing the best of its recent production.

In the Official Competition with “Las buenas hierbas” (“The Good Herbs”, by Mexican director Maria Novaro. The three female performers won Best Actress awards at this year’s International Festival of Cinema in Rome and at the Amazonas Film Fest where it also won the Best Screenplay Award.

“Los labios” (“The lips”) is a Argentinean fiction film that narrates the story of three women who come to a forgotten place in a province where they cure, conduct research, treat and help out in a hospital in ruins. At Cannes, this film also won an important award this year for a performance by a female actor.

Also in competition, but on the First Feature’s section the highlights are the Colombian “Retratos en un mar de mentiras” (“Portraits in a sea of lies”) and the co-production Costa Rica-Colombia “Del Amor y de otros demonios” (“Of love and other demons”)

In the Documentary Competition, we’ll present the Venezuelan film “Story of a day”.

Alfredo Calvino, director of Latinofusion, will be in Havana as a panlelist at the Iberoamerican Films Crossing Borders Industry Meeting until December 8th.

(Ursula Pruneda, Ofelia Medina, Ana Ofelia Murguia and Miriam Balderas)

The filmmaker, director of the only Latin-American film in competition in the official section, picked up the award on behalf of the actresses and thanked them for “their complicity and their dedication in the years that have been necessary to shoot the movie.”

“The good herb” is the fifth film by the Mexican director and bears the stamp of Novaro, proud that she set this up as “obviously female and obviously Mexican.”, said Novaro in a press conference after the ceremony.

Úrsula Pruneda, one of the awarded actresses, found out about it while she was on her way to Manaus (Brasil) where she represented the film at the Amazonas Film Festival (Nov 5 -11, 2010)

There, the jury awarded Mexican director Maria Novaro‘s The Good Herbs both Best Actress (also to the the ensemble female cast) and Best Screenplay. The Good Herbs was the only film in competition to receive two trophys. In the selection there was gems such as “Winter’s bone” (2010 Sundance’s winner, which last week got the Gotham Award)

The Good Herbs is gathering excellent reviews by the international press and after a stopover in Huelva, where it was also in competition, is now heading for the Havana Film Fest, opening December 2nd.

Finally, after all the buzz created by the extensive coverage by all big global news outlets, Juan of the Dead, Cuba’s first feature-length horror film in half a century, is ready.

The irreverent Cuban feature film is co-produced by Spain’s La Zanfoña Producciones and Cuba’s independent la Quinta Avenida producciones de Cuba. It has also funding from the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficas (Cuba), Canal Sur (Spain) y Televisión Española, the Junta de Andalucía, Ibermedia and Cinergia Fund

“Juan of the Dead” (Juan de los Muertos), at a budgeted euro 1.3 million ($1.65 million) the most expensive recent feature film made on the island, has an ironic take on contemporary Cuba. In Alejandro Brugues’ film, an everyday Cuban protagonist, played by Alexis Díaz de Villegas, is trying to make money off an invasion of flesh-eating zombies, while the communist government insists all this is a plot backed by the United States to destabilize the country.

The horror comedy promotes that “50 years later, a new revolution has begun”) provoked a big buzz during the past edition of the Marché du Film, in Cannes, when the project was presented internationally. Repporters from around the globe interviewed Burgués and it received the blessing of the zombie-pope himself. Simon Pegg’s twittered that “”Yes we are aware of the new Cuban zombie movie, Juan of the Dead and wish it all the best. In a time of crisis. A hero must rise. Etc … ” and “I sense a Shaun/Juan team up movie called Havana Dead Good Time in London. Cohibas & cricket bats. As another dead basher might saay, groovy!” Thanks Simon! Tell me where to send those Cohibas!!”

AP correspondent Will Weissert gives Juan of the Dead “a real chance at global success.”

This is the second feature-length movie of Brugues, 34. “Personal Belongings”, released in 2007, received acclaim at the international film festivals of Miami and Malaga and was distributed worldwide by Latinofusion.

CNN, Spain’s EL PAIS, The Guardian and even the Zombie Maximum pope:Simon Pegg himself had something to say about this gore-filled black comedy which satirises social mores of Cuba’s communist era.

Juan of the Dead, will land in Cannes Market 2011 where 2 already booked private market screenings have been scheduled. The world premiere has not yet been disclosed but the film is due to be released in Cuba and internationally at the end of summer.
